A good Half Guard starts here.

Do not allow yourself to get flatten.

If your shoulders are both on the mat, you’re in trouble. That’s exactly what the top player wants of you.

That’s why we do an initial hip escape (2:46).

Even if you have no idea what you want to do in Half Guard, you need to get to one side.

When you do this, most of the time the top player will drive back into you and that’s your cue to attempt the John Wayne sweep.

Now you have options for different reactions at this point.

  1. Underhook → basic half guard sweep or to the back (4:01)

  2. If no Underhook → Knee Shield → re-guard (6:15)

  3. If no Knee Shield → Half Butterfly (8:31)

Don’t worry about any thing else right now.

If you can get this short, simple system down, you can then add on anything else you may like.

Purple belt in 3 years
