TFS#95: HQ Sweep, Building Muscle, & Beyond BJJ

You're never going to figure it all out.

You’re never going to figure out all of Jiu-Jitsu.

Because as soon as you figure one thing out, you’ll realize there’s something new to figure out.

This shouldn’t discourage you—it should free you.

Because once you understand there is no end, you can relax and enjoy the process.

Now onto today’s topics...

Technique Of The Week: HQ Sweep

Headquarters (HQ) is a common passing position due to the flexibility and stability of the position.

If you want me to cover passing options from this position, just reply to this email with “HQ.”

Just because it’s a great passing option doesn’t mean you have to give up the pass as a guard player.

There are multiple options when you find yourself as the bottom player.

The main thing you need to do when you find your opponent settling in HQ is to keep them off-balanced.

Don’t let them stabilize—that’s where they’re strongest.

With the little off-balances you can establish guards like De La Riva or X-Guard.

X-Guard (both full and single leg) are great options for sweeping.

Learning to sweep from this position is ideal since you are essentially going from bottom to top very quickly.

Jiu-Jitsu Longevity: Muscle Building & Gut Health

Training Jiu-Jitsu consistently isn’t the hard part, but sticking to a nutrition plan can be.

It’s the number one reason that holds Jiu-Jitsu athletes back.

Join a free webinar hosted by NZ Fitness to learn how you can use food to maximize the benefits of training while improving gut health.

Webinar date and time is: March 6th, Wednesday at 6:00PM PST.

Closing Thoughts: What’s Beyond Jiu-Jitsu?

If you no longer could train Jiu-Jitsu.

Maybe you lived in a small town and the gym closed.

Or the gym got ridiculously pricey.

Or maybe you have an injury that just isn’t worth getting injured again.

Most people can’t think about what they’d do without Jiu-Jitsu.

But life happens, and we may have to quit our training one day.

Would you have the desire to pick up something new and become a novice in another hobby?

What does Jiu-Jitsu mean to you?

And how would you substitute what it brings to your life?

Just a good check-in on your journey, something to think about.

See you on the mats,

Wayne
